Winning halloween costumes
Winning halloween costumes
Halloween costumes do not have to be gory, ghastly, scary, or frightening. You can bring the house down with drop-dead hilarious costumes that will not only tickle the bones of your friends but as well as the judges. Here are some of the costumes I wore in Halloween contests at work which garnered first place for funniest or most creative.
2001 winner - Lady Liberty
Lady Liberty rallies all women to shop.
United we shop.
The Lady Liberty costume was made out of two U.S. flags draped over a homemade white gown. So as not to be disrespectful, the flags were never cut and were left intact. My hair was wrapped in coiled silver tinsel from past years' Christmas décor and the crown strung with blinking lights. Lady Liberty's torch was an LED flashlight with flaming orange cellophane.
It was a great pleasure to be incognito. I just loved the expression on people's faces wondering who the person was behind the somber silver and blue mask.
The costume won first place for creativity. It was also so appropriate because the Halloween contest took place a month after 9/11.
2002 winner - conjoined clowns
Which one is the dummy?
In this case, both.
This inflatable clowns costume was so much fun to wear. It fooled many people because it was difficult to tell the real person from the dummy. Take a good look at the photo and you know what I mean.
The torso and legs came in separate pieces and had to be inflated with a tire pump. These were then inserted into the clown jumpsuit which was more a puzzle to put on. Of course, with some help from my friends, I was able to get the other clown to ride piggyback, put a mask on my face and strut my stuff in front of the judges.
2003 winner - Prima Ballerina
Supersized prima ballerina
When I was a little girl, I always dreamed of becoming a ballerina. Well, that never happened and this was my way of pretending to be one. This inflatable ballerina costume was pumped up by a small fan ran by a 9-volt battery hidden inside the girth of the pink tutu. I did not realize how wide this costume would become until I got stuck in the doorway of the ladies' restroom. The air had to be let out to get me through the door and then reinflated again. It was actually one of the most comfortable costumes I have ever worn. The air circulating inside the costume kept me cool at all times, considering I had all my clothes on inside the costume.
2004 winner - Tina Tater
Big potato
If I could not be a Fat Cat or a Top Dog, then I could be a Big Potato. That was exactly what I did in the 2004 Halloween contest.
The hat had a mesh so I could see where I was going, but it was difficult to look down or see side to side. When one of the eyes fell off, one of my co-workers (a female, fortunately) pressed it back not knowing that the velcro was attach to strategic places on my chest. As you can see from the photo, the right eye is a bit skewed.
My large purse was made of construction paper with the recognizable two arches emblem. The french fries were made of foam which I cut up into strips and stuffed into my bag. Oh no,Tina Tater would never want to become french fries!
2009 winner - Fork & Spoon
Where's the knife?
The fork and spoon costume was the easiest, lightest, and least cumbersome costume I have ever worn. It was made of flexible polyester and had a hidden cap to put over your head. Black turtleneck top and black pants completed the outfit. The key here was the application of the silver make-up and blue eyeliner and lipstick to give the spacey look.
Guess who was the spoon!
2011 winner - Nefertiti, Queen of the NIle
My most dramatic costume
A bit theatrical
In this 2011 Halloween costume, I was mistaken for King Tut, Cleopatra, Ramses II and a sarcophagus. Only one person guessed right that I was Nefertiti. This costume was complete from head to toe and there was no need for me to add any upper arm snake bracelet, although I did wear a pair of chandelier earrings.
It was great fun competing in the Halloween costume contest, winning (tied with Power Ranger) and being a queen for the day.
Which type of costume will you pick to wear?
What you pick to wear for Halloween could be your alter ego, your second self.
