Summer Cantaloupe Drink
Summer cantaloupe or melon drink
There are so many ways to eat and serve a cantaloupe, but what about a cantaloupe drink for the hot summer months? This is a non-alcoholic ice-cold summer cooler and is also known as the melon drink in the Philippines. The cantaloupe is shredded with a special tool similar to a zester to create spaghetti-like strings, mixed with its own juice, water, sugar and a squeeze of lime. Served cold, this cantaloupe summer drink not only refreshes, quenches your thirst, but is a guaranteed winner. This cantaloupe drink is extremely easy to make and can become addicting.
How to pick a cantaloupe
Color is a light beige (not green), smells sweet, the blossom end has a give when pressed, and when tapped, the cantaloupe sounds hollow.
1. Wash and cut cantaloupe in half
It is always advisable to wash the cantaloupe before cutting it open.
2. Discard the seeds
Cantaloupe is an excellent source of Vitamin C, beta carotene and anti-oxidant.
3. Grate cantaloupe with special tool (also used to grate coconut) over a large bowl - Reserve as much of the cantaloupe juice
The simple tool used for grating the cantaloupe is also a coconut grater which is available in Asian stores, eBay or Amazon. A lemon zester can be used but the stringy effect will not be as spaghetti-like. The grater has a wooden handle with looped metal at the top edge. Make sure not to grate too deep into the rind.
4. Add water, sugar and juice of one small lime
Add a cup of sugar and enough water to cover the cantaloupe pulp. Add the juice of a small lime and stir together until sugar is dissolved. Refrigerate for a few hours or preferably overnight. This allows the cantaloupe pulp, sugar, and lime to meld together. It will be nice and cold when it ready to be consumed.
This serves 4-6 people depending on how many people wants seconds.
5. Ladle into tall glasses and serve - Interestingly delicious and addicting
These drinks are best served without crushed ice or ice cubes in order to keep the flavor from being diluted. You will want to eat this with a spoon so you can savor every drop.
